We use our homemade compost to generally amend the soil. We have a lot of clay and the compost really helps. When I’m preparing to plant I usually apply an organic balanced fertilizer following the suggested amounts on the bag. I like to look up what each vegie needs (for example, cabbage likes nitrogen, but onions need low nitrogen). Beets and garlic are light feeders. Then you’ll have a better idea of which fertilizer to buy. If you’re really picky and want to learn more about the content of your soil, you can get inexpensive soil testing kits that test your Ph, nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus levels. I’ve found these at Bi Mart. The Farm Store on Territorial carries blood meal, bone meal etc. if your soil is totally absent of one of the essentials. Good luck. Happy gardening!!
