Anyone have solutions to amend heavy clay soil for our area?

Build raised beds, apply lime for balancing pH, amend yearly with compost blended with peat moss and mulch beds overwinter with fall leaves.

Work beds only when just moist but not soggy, with a digging fork or broad-fork rather than a shovel. A fork with longer tines is preferred. I generally have to wait for a dry day or two after a rainy spell before digging. This practice will help prevent the formation of clods, and make the hoeing easier.

Top beds at planting time and fill planting holes with spent potting soil from last years containers blended with balanced organic fertilizer. Cultivate around plants to keep soil loose and porous, using a hand hoe or claw-like tool. Use soaker hoses during the hot, dry summer months.

In summer, mulch around plants to keep moisture in the soil, also. I used a light layer of fine rye straw on top of this flower bed last August.
