Hey gardeners, what’s your favorite tomato for our region? What in your experience are the plants least prone to problems, are prolific, fast producers, yummy, great for sauce, whatever!

I grow several varieties each year: some tried and true from previous years, and some new, because we just never know what the growing season will be like! For several years my favorite sauce tomato has been Anna Russian, which is an heirloom from Oregon. She’s a spindly plant compared to the others, but produces amazing ox heart shaped thick meat tomatoes. But also for sauce, just plain old Roma is always dependable. Last year our favorite eating tomatoes were Tappys Heritage and St Pierre, both heirlooms. Celebrity is still an old favorite, too.

Thanks for the info.  I need help on specific kinds, although heirlooms are always a good idea, I think.

Hey Becca – hybrids aren’t bad either as many have been created to do well in our area by resisting local pests and other issues like blight. But seed from them will get you something other than the original plant from what I’ve learned. Then again, even seed from an heirloom can be a mix if several heirloom varieties are planted in the same vicinity…thanks to our beloved bees. Anyway, I will let the forum know if I have extra plants this year. If all goes well, I will! Good luck with your tomatoes.

I haven’t grown tomatoes in a few years but prefer ones with low acid, like the Russian heirloom, ‘Black Krim.’ I may try to grow a cherry tomato on my deck and would choose the one that is ripe when orange, since it is fairly low acid. The name escapes me right now.
